Infection preventioists (IP) do ongoing rounds to view vascular access dressing as a goal to decrease risk factors for infection. These rounds normally include: was the dressing changed, was the dressing dated and initialed, was the dressing dry and intact, as well as any signs and symptoms of infection. Vascular access nurses round on patients looking at some of these items but their focus is on: has the line been pulled out more then when inserted, does a patient need a single, double, or triple lumen catheter, how long will the patient be on medication. These are just a few examples of what they are individually looking for. I have found when asking IP different questions they were unsure of what should be done. Examples: This line is exposed 8cm do we need to do anything?, This line was exposed 2cm and now is exposed 7cm do we need to do anything?", The patient will be on 2 antibiotics does the patient need a single lumen or double lumen line? What is the arm circumference compared to when inserted? When asking a nurse that was caring for her patient the knowledge was less. Many facilities have not moved to having vascular access teams working 24/7 so there is a void all together.

Brenda Quayle-Rivera RN, CIC, VA-BC, is a Vascular Access Specialist for Priority PICC Solutions Inc.(PPS) She graduated in 2010 with her Associate Nursing Degree. She is currently a student at Walden University and is working on her Master’s Degree in Nursing Management and Administration.
Brenda has a history of working in the ICU ,a supervisory role, Infection Preventionist, and Clinical Nurse Manager. She submitted a research poster at the 2017 National APIC convention and had a paper published. Brenda was certified in PICC line insertion in 2010. Brenda has continuously placed lines and has been an advocate for appropriate line placement. She accepted an opportunity for growth in Vascular Access in 2015 with Priority PICC Solutions and was mentored by the PPS management to assist in obtaining her VA-BC in 2016 and CIC in 2017..
