O7 — Improve Early Detection of Infiltration and Extravasation Events: Training Non-Vascular Access Team Members on Proven Methods, Protocols, and Technology
Tuesday, September 18
11:15 AM - 11:45 AM
Location: C150
Presentation CE Credits: 1 for two (2) 30-min Breakouts
As VAT members, there is thorough understanding of the causes and signs of an infiltration/ extravasation. That same level of knowledge may not apply to nurses across the hospital in order to identify a potential infiltration or extravasation and call your team to assess/replace the IV. This session will review the various causes of an infiltration beyond the default “bad stick” by the nurse. The speaker will cover methods you can train your nursing units to follow in order to better assess the site and help with the early detection of an infiltration/extravasation event. Standard methods such as touch, look compare concept will be discussed, in addition to sharing IV assessment protocols deployed in various facilities. The session will include a discussion on technology that can be deployed to aid nurses in the early detection of infiltration events. Early detection of infiltration events is key to minimizing patient harm and improve patient safety and outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- Educate nurses on the common causes of infiltration/extravasation events.
- Understand a review of the TLC assessment method with key points to educate hospital staff to aid the early detection of infiltrations.
- Understand other facility protocols/ technology deployed that have successfully reduced patient harm through the early detection of infiltration/extravasation events.
