D6 — Not Just Skin Deep: Promoting Pediatric CVAD Performance Through Skin Health and Device Security
Saturday, September 15
4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: B140-144
Presentation CE Credits: 1
Children requiring CVADs are some of the most complicated in our healthcare systems. Acute and chronically ill children need stable, reliable vascular access to receive treatment, however complications are rife – one in four pediatric CVADs stop functioning before treatment is completed. This includes significant harm associated with ineffective device security (e.g., accidental dislodgement and infections) and skin injuries (e.g., contact dermatitis, pressure injuries, MARSI).
The search for solutions to prevent and treat pediatric CVAD complications through effective security continues. This presentation will examine the current causes of pediatric CVAD dysfunction, and the strategies and technologies which are available to prevent complications. It will also summarize and critique the variety of approaches used to promote healthy skin and treat impaired skin surrounding CVAD.This presentation will concentrate on practical, pragmatic and cost-effective solutions which are pertinent across international pediatric healthcare settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the current burden of CVAD complications and skin injury in pediatrics
- Describe practical solutions to improve the application of ‘the basics’ to prevent CVAD complication and skin injury
- Describe the new innovations to improve CVAD complications including device security and skin health
