N6 — Under the drapes: Understanding PIV extravasation in the operating room

Tuesday, September 18
10:30 AM - 11:00 AM
Location: B140-144
Presentation CE Credits: 1 for two (2) 30-min Breakouts

Monitoring peripheral venous catheters in the operating room presents unique challenges and there are currently no published standards of care specific to this clinical setting. This session will explore the incidence of PIV extravasation in the operating room at our pediatric institution as well as describe characteristics of intraoperative PIV extravasation. Unique challenges to monitoring PIVs in the operating room will be discussed and several case reports will be shared. The role of appropriate length catheters in reducing non-functioning and extravasated PIVs will be discussed. We will begin to explore various strategies for monitoring PIVs in the operating room as well as share our institution’s current practice guidelines to reduce extravasations in the operating room. We will encourage audience participation to begin to understand others’ practices surrounding this controversial topic.
