In 2017, Cincinnati Children's Hospital began a multi-disciplinary project to improve vascular access device selection & placement in all patients in the inpatient setting. Importantly, patients with chronic kidney disease/ end stage renal disease (CKD/ESRD) have lifelong vascular access needs, and have specific vascular access recommendations (including but not limited to avoidance of peripherally inserted central catheters, or PICCs), To address these needs, a multi-disciplinary team was developed to address these vascular access issues for the pediatric CKD/ESRD patient population. This session highlights our center's systematic approach aimed to preserve all current & future vascular access options in ESRD / CKD patients, while balancing quality of life and anxiety surrounding venipuncture.

Dr. Donna Claes has been a pediatric nephrologist since 2013. In addition to her academic training within pediatric nephrology, she also completed the Quality Scholar's program through the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Claes currently serves as the Medical Director of the Dialysis Unit at Cincinnati Children's Hospital . Her academic interest focuses on systems based methods to improve health care delivery to the pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD)/end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patient population. In the 2017, she had the privilege of being involved in hospital wide efforts focused on appropriate vascular access device selection, especially as it pertains to pediatric CKD/ESRD patients.
