While the cost of an IV restart has been discussed in literature, typically only IV supplies and the nurse labor to insert the catheter are factored into the model. But ask any floor nurse and they'll describe the long list of unintended consequences that losing one of your patients' IV sites can bring. Aside from that particular patient's therapy or procedure being delayed, you still have a clipboard of other patients with medication administration windows that haven't changed. In this session, we examine the tangential events that accompany the loss of a peripheral IV site to understand the true impact that IV dislodgement has on nurse workflow, care management, inter-department coordination, and resource utilization.
