M1 — A Collaborative Approach to IV Therapy in Patients with History of IV Substance Abuse

IV drug abuse is an increasing public health concern. The current or recent use of IV drugs should not preclude the use of long-term IV antibiotics in this patient population. The majority of hospitals do not currently have processes in place to address this crisis and the need for IV related treatment.

Our facility has developed an emerging screening tool to identify patients at risk for tampering with their IV access. Based on the level of risk identified, Tamper Evident Technology (TET) is placed discreetly. Key stakeholders including risk management, legal, patient safety, vascular access, hospitalists, in-patient, and out-patient medical and mental health issues.

We strive to responsibly and compassionately care for this patient population. As health care providers we can no longer look the other way and hope nothing happens or punish the patient for their health history. Let's get the conversation started...

Through experiences in a variety of clinical settings, Toni Eastridge has gained comprehensive knowledge in an acute care rural hospital setting. Toni spent nine years of her career as a clinical nurse in Critical Care Services, five years in Quality Services as a Clinical Documentation Specialist, and has spent the last three years leading as the Clinical Manager of an acute care 29-bed Medical Unit. Toni received her Associate of Science in Nursing at IUPUI in Indianapolis and obtained her Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Nationally respected for her knowledge of infusion therapy and her vascular access expertise, Mickey has spoken at INS (The Infusion Nurses Society), AVA (Association for Vascular Access), AVIR (Association of Vascular and Interventional Radiographers) and has been published in professional journals. While remaining active on the review boards for the Journal of Infusion Nursing and the Journal of the Association for Vascular Access. Mickey leads the Vascular Access Department at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana. Currently a Doctor of Nursing Practice candidate at the University of Southern Indiana.

Brandy Nord, BSN, RN

Brandy Nord began her nursing career as a clinical nurse in a hospital based Post-Acute Nursing facility and Inpatient Rehab Center. She then spent 4 years as a clinical nurse on a Post-Surgical unit. Brandy serves as the Patient Safety Officer for Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, including all inpatient and outpatient operations and physician offices. Brandy earned a Bachelor of Science degree from IUPUI in Indianapolis in 2004, majoring in secondary social science education. In 2011, she received her Associate of Science in Nursing from Vincennes University Jasper Campus and obtained her Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from Western Governors University in January 2018.
