Central venous access device securement is paramount to achieving positive patient outcomes and quality of life for those with chronic access. This talk will lead attendees on a journey through the fear and uncertainty of having a child with long-term access, the limited resources available to help parents and caregivers solve this enormous, under-recognized problem, and how the personal journey for line securement changed our lives. Leveraging over a decade of hands-on experience managing the complexities of multiple medical challenges for my son, attendees will understand my unique perspective on life lived with a CVAD and why securement must be part of every institution’s patient-centered care plan.

Chronic illness can be devastating not simply for the patient, but for their family and loved ones as well. A veteran of over a decade of living with chronic illness, Sarah Palya founded Gus Gear, a Pittsburgh, PA-based medical textile company that makes securement devices and covers for medical implements like central lines, ostomy pouches, and feeding tubes. Sarah is focused on patient safety and quality of life for those with health challenges by allowing patients to their lives to the fullest, using personal experience with the chronic illness of her son Gus as inspiration. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Sarah is passionate about educating consumers, their parents, and clinicians about improving safety and quality of life for patients.
