Vascular access device complications are common. Approximately one third of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC) have complications, requiring the insertion of a new device for completion of treatment, and a further 20-25% are often left in place with no indication. Current IV assessment tools have targeted phlebitis, but the range of concerns is much broader. A comprehensive device assessment would consider indication, efficacy, infection prevention, dressing and securement, and patient education, in addition to complications including phlebitis. This session will propose that a simple mnemonic tool for IV assessment and decision making, such as I-DECIDED, can improve patient outcomes. Implementing this simple tool into daily practice could benefit millions of patients worldwide.

Dr Gillian Ray-Barruel holds a joint appointment as a Senior Research Fellow at QEII Jubilee Hospital and Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. She is dedicated to improving assessment and decision-making by bedside clinicians to prevent patient complications. Gillian has extensive experience in vascular access devices research, critical care nursing, patient assessment, and project management.
