Emergency medicine has historically argued that the only thing that matters is that “it’s an emergency.” Very few conditions require truly emergent vascular access. If a patient needs vascular access immediately, the IO should be the primary VA intervention. Beyond that, there are a number of considerations as to which means of access is most appropriate. Providers should balance those considerations to obtain optimal patient and healthcare system outcomes.

Jonnathan Busko, MD, MPH

Emergency Department Medical Director

Jonnathan Busko is a board certified emergency medicine and EMS physician with more than 25 years experience in emergency medicine, EMS and disaster response. He completed an MD / MPH program at the University of Pittsburgh, a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Albany Medical Center, an EMS Fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center, and a graduate certificate in Community Disaster Preparedness at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He has been an educator for over 30 years. Jonnathan is the emergency department medical director and an ED physician at St Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine and is a firefighter/physician for the Veazie, Maine Fire Department. He is the medical director for the Hermon Mountain Ski Patrol and the United Technologies Center school nurse / school emergency medical assistance program and is the medical advisor for the Eastern Maine Community College EMS education programs and for Acadia Mountain Guides.

Jon Bell is passionate about nursing excellence and advancing expertise. He has an MSN from Grand Canyon University in Nursing Leadership. As an emergency nurse he has honed his skills for over 25 years and has practiced perioperative nursing for 14 years on the side. A particular interest in vascular access brought together these two specialities and provided a place to leverage diverse experiences. Jon also is passionate about teaching and mentoring fellow nurses. He is a resource in his workplace and enjoys encouraging, coaching, shepherding, and cajoling colleagues in their path of professional advancement. Jon is currently working full-time as a clinical education consultant for various companies but still maintains a clinical role working in both the endoscopy department and the ED at MaineGeneral Medical Center.
