This session will provide knowledge, examples and measures of success to show the effective implementation of a vascular access program at a 171 bed acute care community hospital. It will show the importance of having a close relationship between senior administration, middle level management, bedside staff, as well as the hospital board. This session will allow listeners to have a better understanding of how to “bridge the gap” between senior administration and the implementation of a nurse driven vascular access team by proving cost savings. It will show that being cognizant of the fact that all hospital employees are working toward a common goal, but may each have different approaches and ways of thinking truly leads to a successful implementation of a process change and an ultimate cost savings. Actively listening and partnering allows for everyone to be heard to achieve a common goal which ultimately is to provide the best care for patients. The successful development and implementation of a vascular access team led to an 80% decrease in Central Line Acquired Bloodstream Infections in one fiscal year and an approximate $500,000 annual savings.
