D5 — It's Not Just About Insertion but Also Removal!

There are many reasons that central catheters are removed including end of treatment, presence of thrombosis , migration, and infection. Firstly correct identification of catheter complications is key to planning proper intervention. There is a psychological component both negative and positive to removals for patients at the end of their treatment. Often times front line care givers are quick to remove devices or not use them for treatment when thrombosis is present . Education needs to be shared that the thrombosis can often be treated effectively without need for removal or insertion of another device. In addition, an understanding of a patient's total vascular picture should come into play when a line infection presents either localized or systemic. Available options to attempt line salvage and prevention of future infections to include the use antibiotics, antibiotic locks and ethanol locks will be discussed..

Blanche Murphy has been a nurse for over forty years at a large Harvard teaching medical center. She has a strong vascular access background working both bedside and in procedural areas with both the department of surgery and interventional radiology. Her present role is Parenteral, Enteral, and Venous Access Consultant and Nurse Coordinator for the Central Line Service. In addition she teaches in the continuing education program at Boston College School of Nursing, has published and is on the review board for JAVA. Blanche is Vascular Access Board Certified, is a recognized speaker and is involved in both the local and national organizations of AVA and INS.
