Explore the region’s growing health care technology industry; what it takes to grow a successful start-up company (including specific regional geographic advantages and barriers); the principles, guideposts and strategies that helped these companies thrive; and when it is appropriate to move on.

Lisa Mazur is a digital health attorney who co-leads the McDermott Will & Emery LLP Digital Health group. Lisa advises health care providers, payers, investors, associations and technology companies on the legal, regulatory, and compliance matters touching digital health, including telehealth, telemedicine, mobile health and consumer wellness tools, and develops practical, forward-thinking solutions and strategies that meet the complex and still-evolving digital health regulatory landscape. Lisa’s practice also focuses on the development of revenue and reimbursement strategies that comply with laws and regulations, and contemplate the shift to value-based reimbursement and future policy changes.

Steven Lee

In addition to his formal training in eye care, Dr. Steven Lee has a background in engineering, as well as a keen interest in optics. Before starting Opternative, he was in clinical practice from 2007-2013. During that time, he focused on the areas of difficult contact lens fittings, ocular disease treatment, and dry eye management. In addition to seeing patients in the past, Steven has also taught ophthalmology students the basics of clinical refraction and the systematic approach to contact lens fittings. He has managed numerous surgical cases and was previously a reviewer for the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education, as well as a researcher and clinical investigator for the Global Revitalens Experience and Acceptance Trial. He recently gave a TEDx talk, titled 'Mission for Vision', outlining his journey to make vision care accessible to the entire world. As Opternative's Chief Science Officer, Dr. Lee leads up the company's research and development team which focuses on intellectual property, adaptive module iteration to the current exam platform, and clinical trial operations. He loves thinking outside of the box, and enjoys creating solutions to problems that people never thought were possible to solve.

David Cohn is the Founder and CEO of Regroup, a leading Chicago telepsychiatry company that delivers integrated mental health services via telemedicine. David has spoken on behavioral health at Stanford MedX, the Governor of Illinois’s subcommittee on telehealth, and at numerous healthcare events. Regroup has won multiple awards for its work delivering mental health services, including the 2017 Chicago Innovation Social Innovator Award, Best Social Impact Company, and the Chicago Inno '50 on Fire', and is among the fastest growing healthcare services companies in the USA. David holds an MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Colorado College. He served in the US Peace Corps in Guatemala and advised global CIOs as Director for Latin America, and Southern Europe with CEB. He has lived, worked and spoken on 3 continents.

Mindi Knebel is the Founder and CEO of Kaizen Health, a Chicago-based startup that connects healthcare and transportation to increase access to healthcare. Mindi has spent over decade as an early employee of five startups. Throughout her career, Mindi has spent time in business and sales operations/planning, M&A/integrations, technology project management, accounting/finance and human resources.

A passionate problem solver, Mindi was inspired to start Kaizen Health due to some challenges that her own family faced with medical transportation. Not wanting others to endure the same challenges, Mindi led the Kaizen Health team to develop a robust logistics intelligence engine to connect healthcare providers, health insurance companies, transportation networks and patients to ensure visibility, transparency and communication among all constituents.

Mindi is an alum of the University of Iowa and Colorado Technical University and sits on the associate boards of Cook County Health Foundation and SALUTE.

Patrick Spain

First Stop Health, LLC

Patrick Spain, the CEO, and Co-founder of First Stop Health, LLC started the company because of his own unsatisfactory experience with the healthcare system, and his desire to improve that experience for others.

He is a serial entrepreneur who has founded or co-founded four Web-based companies since 1990. As the Co-founder, long-time chairman and CEO of Hoover’s, Inc., Spain led the company from a small book publisher in 1992 to a profitable, publicly traded online business information services company, with $31 million in revenue in 2001. Hoovers was sold to D&B in 2003 for $119 million. Subsequently, Spain was the founder, chairman, and CEO of HighBeam Research, which he started in 2002. Highbeam Research was sold to Cengage Learning in December 2008. He also co-founded and serves as executive chairman of Newser, a news filtering and summarization service with an audience of over six million readers each month.

In addition, Spain sits on the Board of several private companies including company information provider Owler and event scheduling software provider Occasion. He is also a board member of Community Health, the largest free clinic in the U.S, and sits on the Board of Governors of Opportunity International, the largest microlender in the world.
