EDU 14 - RO-ILS and Safety Culture: Physician's Role in Communication, Collaboration and Commitment

Incident learning, a component of the Target Safely initiative, is recognized as an important component in fostering a collaborative team-based approach to quality and safety improvement. RO-ILS: Radiation Oncology Incident Learning System?, cosponsored by ASTRO and AAPM with support from ASRT and AAMD, can be utilized as a tool to both nurture the desired culture of safety and measure the impact of engagement. A member of the Radiation Oncology Healthcare Advisory Council (RO-HAC), the multidisciplinary team that analyze RO-ILS events nationwide, will provide interesting RO-ILS case studies and discuss overall aggregated data. These real-life examples will highlight the negative effects that a weak culture of safety can have on clinical practice. Additionally, in 2017, RO-ILS is working to collect safety culture survey data utilizing a validated instrument and hopes to share preliminary aggregated data during the session. At the local level, a RO-ILS user will speak to the critical role a clinic's implementation of incident learning plays in maximizing participation and learning. Lastly, another RO-ILS user will speak to the need for a multidisciplinary approach to reporting and analysis, particularly physicians' involvement in the overall process. While physicians are commonly involved in decisions/actions that lead to safety events, and occupy a central role in clinic leadership, physicians are under-represented as champions of incident learning and at times fall short as primary movers of improvements that mitigate risk. Practical strategies to improve safety culture, including physician involvement, will be discussed.
