This session will discuss how social media is emerging within Radiation Oncology, and how it can be harnessed to safeguard the image of our specialty. The concept of social media, as well as its pros and cons will be introduced. An in-depth description of ASTRO social initiatives will be provided. For example, the 1 million Gray question asks, "What is the most important research question that must be answered in the next 3-5 years?" In addition, the Red Journal Gray Zone tackles controversial cases by publishing expert opinions, then asking the broader #RadOnc community to share their opinions on Twitter using the hashtag #gyzone. Finally, attendees will learn about how participation in online communities like theMednet can serve as a virtual tumor board when faced with the nuances of real-world cases.
