4-D imaging has been under rapid developments for various imaging modalities, including CT, CBCT, MRI, and has been implemented in a wide variety of clinical applications. Compared to conventional 3-D imaging, 4-D imaging provides unique opportunities to capture the organ motion to substantially improve the precision in radiotherapy of moving targets, such as lung, liver and pancreas tumors. Due to increased complexity in 4-D imaging, it is critical to understand the mechanism an also the challenges and pitfalls in 4-D imaging in order to use these technologies effectively. The session first provides an overview of the current 4-D imaging techniques, including the principles of 4-D imaging, the advantages and limitations of each technique, and their clinical applications. Several recent advancements in 4-D imaging will then be introduced, including: 1. 4-D CT/CBCT. Various novel techniques have been developed to reduce the motion artifacts and derive functional information from the 4-D CT. Motion compensated 4-D CBCT has been developed to use deformation between phases to minimize the artifacts caused by acquisition under-sampling. 2. 4-D MRI. New techniques based on external or internal landmarks have been developed for 4-D MRI to derive anatomical or functional information for target localization, on-line plan adaption or treatment assessment. 3. Beyond 4-D imaging. Most of the challenges in 4-D imaging originate from irregularities in patient breathing. Obtaining quantitative information of patient breathing can move us beyond 4-D imaging to generate dynamic volumetric images with minimal artifacts from breathing irregularities. Quantitative breathing motion modeling and utilities in 4-D imaging will be introduced.

Dr. Low has been an academic medical physicist for more than 27 years and has been active in research and development in the areas of radiation therapy dosimetry, quality assurance, intensity modulated radiation therapy, breathing motion modeling, image guided radiation therapy, and adaptive radiation therapy. He is board certified by both the ABMP and the ABR in therapy medical physics and is active in the national associations of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American Society for Radiation Oncology. He has been an author on more than 240 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has been the principal investigator on 5 NIH R01 grants and one NIH R21 grant.
