Squeezed by rising costs, this hospital struggled for a few years to find adequate resources for capital improvement. Facility air conditioning and ensuring the correct temperature year-round was one of its highest operating costs. While optimizing this cost of air conditioning was imperative, the fact that its overall efficiency, good maintenance, and compliance to health standards were also extremely critical for patients’ health and safety. This project, taken up by the hospital operations department, is a classic example where representatives from different functions came together to address a business task of reducing the per square feet cost of air conditioning without compromising patient care. With Lean Six Sigma methodology leveraging tools like the Kano model, 5S, brainstorming, CAPA, etc., the team worked toward plugging the gaps in the existing system at no additional cost, thereby reducing the cost from US$3.6 to US$2.6 per square feet. This project as a best practice was replicated across the entire network, resulting in an overall impact of US$17 million. Apart from achieving a healthy P&L, customer satisfaction indices were some other indicators that were positively impacted by the project.
