T23 - Tales of the Force: Six Sigma Case Studies From our Galaxy

Disappointed with the pace and confidence of your problem-solving efforts? Do you ever feel like there aren't enough tools; or maybe there are too many? Perplexed by the incomprehensible tables of statistical output? Stymied by processes that aren't normally distributed or in statistical control? Feel like you're missing something with fishbone diagrams, the null hypothesis, and p-values? This session focuses on how to bring the most powerful of the available tools and techniques together in an iterative process to move confidently and effectively through the design, measure, analyze, improve, control (DMAIC) phases to solve tough, complex problems. Three diverse case studies (mechanical, electrical, and chemical/bio) will show how these tools come together in various ways and sequences. The reason for selecting each tool will be explained along with the fundamental statistical basis for the tool. Substantial time will be spent understanding how to design each study and analyze the results in a graphical manner.

Bev Daniels graduated from Michigan Technological University with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. She has had extensive experience in the last 30 years developing and providing lean and Six Sigma training courses as well as implementing lean and Six Sigma in a variety of manufacturing industries. She is currently the Master Black Belt and senior director of operational excellence at IDEXX Laboratories Inc. She has held various positions in quality engineering and management with Fairchild and National Semiconductor, General Electric Aircraft Engines, Honda of America Manufacturing, Intel, and Warn Industries.

Dr. Sandy Furterer is an associate professor at the University of Dayton, in the Engineering Management, Systems and Technology Department. Furterer designed and deployed operational excellence programs for service industries, including healthcare, financial services, and retail. She has over 25 years of experience in business process and quality improvements. She is an ASQ Fellow, ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), Quality Engineer (CQE), and a certified Harrington Institute Master Black Belt. She received her Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Central Florida, developing and implementing a framework for integrating lean and Six Sigma for service processes. Furterer published four textbook reference books, seven refereed journal articles, 23 refereed conference proceedings, and presented 64 conference presentations since 2002.
