T28 - People's Stories Foreshadow Results

Tuesday, May 1
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: WSCC 2AB

Level: Intermediate

Discover how to reduce your organization's chances of business excellence initiative failure by recognizing the power of the stories that people in your organization tell themselves about their experiences. Learn why people resist, how language affects everything, and the power of changing individual sense-making frameworks to drive adoption of business excellence practices in your organization. Three handouts will help you assess your starting point and create an action plan that recognizes the impact that word meanings and stories have on your business excellence initiative.

Learning Objectives:

Charlie Barton

Barton Consulting, LLC
Rogers, Arkansas

Charlie Barton is President of Barton Consulting LLC. Growing up in Northwest Arkansas and listening to her Ozark-based seafaring family tell stories gave Charlie an interest in stories and storytelling. Joining the US Navy also gave her an appreciation of systems thinking and continuous improvement. Over the years, she came to see how effective business practices reduced waste, encouraged innovation, and supported communities. Her research findings revealed the importance of employee experiences and storytelling on determining the success or failure of a quality management initiative.

She is passionate about helping small businesses. Charlie partners with businesses to increase their profitability by improving business processes through storytelling and science. She has presented at recorded webinars, symposiums, and professional groups. Charlie holds a PhD in Leadership and Organization Change, as well as an MBA from Walden University. She is an ASQ Certified Auditor as well as an Examiner for the Arkansas Governor’s Quality Award for 2017 and 2018. In July 2017, the Human Development and Leadership division of the ASQ published the primer, Appreciation for Systems, which she co-authored.
