The skills and abilities to perform a root cause analysis (RCA) are essential even in a digital age. This session will present the advantages and disadvantages for various approaches to RCA. It will also offer three ways in which RCAs can go wrong; these are approaches to RCA that don't seek the cause of the problem under investigation and should be avoided. The session will also present variations on well-known quality tools that can be used during an RCA as well as advice and guidance based on the speaker's years of experience with the topic.

He is currently senior manager, quality engineering and risk management at Teleflex, Inc. in Reading, PA. Laman earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees in chemical engineering from Syracuse University. He is an ASQ Fellow, past chair of the certification board, and present chair of the Professional Ethics and Qualifications Committee. Laman is an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Reliability Engineer (CRE), Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE), Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), Quality Auditor (CQA), and Biomedical Auditor (CBA).
