Concurrent Session

W06 - A FMEA Dilemma and Countermeasures

Wednesday, May 2
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Location: WSCC Ballroom 6E

Level: Intermediate

The concept of failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is rather simple and widely known. In theory, everyone should be capable to do it with some basic training. Yet in practice a huge variation in quality and competency exists. Expectations of how the FMEA should be done vary significantly. People with different backgrounds or in different industries have vastly different experiences. Two typical struggles are constantly seen: effectiveness and efficiency. Because FMEA focuses on potential problems in the future, the effectiveness can't be directly verified. Objective measures to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of work is lagging. The other issue is efficiency. A significant amount of resources tends to be invested in the work and its effectiveness is unknown. This session will shed some light on the challenges and the countermeasures.
