Plant Science Training in 2035

Saturday, July 14
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

In this workshop, the Plant Science Research Network (PSRN) will share their recommendations for graduate training over the next 20 years and engage attendees in an interactive science communication exercise.

In the fall of 2016 and 2017, the PSRN hosted a series of strategic planning workshops with students, faculty, and industry representatives to identify robust and innovative concepts to improve graduate and postdoctoral training in the plant sciences. The resulting recommendations are described in, “Reinventing Postgraduate Training in the Plant Sciences: T-Training Defined through Modularity, Customization, and Distributed Mentorship.” These recommendations seek to modernize training and better prepare trainees for careers within and beyond academia. The PSRN welcomes you to join us on Plantae to learn more at

The workshop will be divided into two parts: Part 1 focus on the PSRN training recommendations and facilitate discussions about how to implement the recommendations. Part 2 will focus on one of the recommendations (practical training for science communication) and work with attendees to develop their research elevator pitch to more effectively engage with diverse audiences at conferences and through social media. Come prepared to participate in this hands-on workshop; whether you’re new to social media or have been using it for years, you will come away from this discussion with more followers interested in your research! A computer or smartphone is encouraged but not required to participate in the workshop.

Requires pre-registration, space is limited.
