FS-013 - Penn to Paper: Urban Sketching in Philadelphia

Sketchers and doodlers of all skill levels are welcome to join veteran urban sketchers and enjoy a day of urban sketching workshops and sketch walks to discover historic and contemporary Philadelphia. Bring your own materials; sketchbooks will be provided. Sketchbooks will be displayed in ASLA Central.

RICHARD ALOMAR, ASLA, RLA-Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
Richard Alomar is a landscape architect, and associate professor of landscape architecture at Rutgers University. His work as a professional landscape architect and a researcher uses sketching as an exploratory tool to observe the environment, record impressions and develop ideas on space, place and design. His research focus is on the use of sketching as a toll for engagement and public outreach. He holds a B.S. in agronomy from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and an M.L.A from Louisiana State University.

JAMES RICHARDS, FASLA, is an urban designer, artist, author and educator whose work explores great places and placemaking around the globe. He is a co-founder of the urban design consultancy Townscape, Inc., and an Advisory Board member, blog correspondent and instructor for the international non-profit Urban Sketchers. His on-location sketches have been widely published, and in group and solo exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. His book, Freehand Drawing and Discovery: Urban Sketching and Concept Drawing for Designers, won an ASLA Honor Award, and he is the recipient of ASLA's Bradford Williams Medal and the ASLA President's Medal.

ROBERT CHIPMAN, ASLA, RLA, has been employing pen-interactive computer freehand drawing techniques which can be applied to design and landscape architecture since 2005. He's still drawing on paper and the backs of envelopes, too. He's been known to do some of his best drawing for contractors, utilizing a can of orange spray paint, or perhaps sketching a detail on his hand.
