Once in a generation, the RPA produces a long-range vision for the tristate region of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Together with CCNY and Princeton University, RPA launched a design competition to envision the future of four corridor geographies in the region. Historical context and future visions will be highlighted.

Robert Freudenberg is vice president of RPA's energy and environmental programs, leading initiatives including climate mitigation and adaptation, open space conservation, park development, and water resource management. Rob has been with RPA since 2006 and most recently served as New Jersey director. Prior to joining RPA, Rob served as coastal management fellow at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, focusing on policies for the New Jersey DEP. Rob holds a MPA in environmental science and policy from the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs and a bachelor’s in environmental biology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, ASLA, AIA

Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, ASLA, AIA is an associate professor of landscape architecture at City College of New York and principal of Catherine Seavitt Studio. Her research explores adaptation to climate change in urban environments and the novel transformation of landscape restoration practices. She is also interested in the intersection of political power, environmental activism, and public health, particularly as seen through the design of public space and policy. Her recent books include Structures of Coastal Resilience (Island Press, 2018); Depositions: Roberto Burle Marx and Public Landscapes under Dictatorship (University of Texas Press, 2018); and Corridor Workbook (Regional Plan Association, 2017).

Ellen Neises, ASLA

University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Design/RANGE

Ellen is Executive Director of PennPraxis, at Penn Design, where she teaches landscape design, focusing on large-scale and large-scope design problems involving ecology. Ellen is a founder of Range and a RLA with a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard and 9 years of policy experience. Ellen co-led the PennDesign/OLIN team’s work on Hunts Point Lifelines, a winning entry in the 2014 Rebuild by Design competition. Prior to Range and Penn, Ellen was associate partner at James Corner Field Operations, where she worked on award-winning projects including Fresh Kills Park, Lake Ontario Park in Toronto, and Harlem River Muscota Marsh.

Susannah C. Drake, FASLA, AIA

Principal
DLANDstudio Architecture + Landscape Architecture

Susannah C. Drake, FASLA, RA, RLA, is the founding principal of DLANDstudio Architecture and Landscape Architecture pllc. The firm is the recipient of city, state, and national AIA and ASLA awards, among others. In 2013, Susannah was awarded the AIA Young Architects Award and Fellowship in the ASLA, and was recognized as an Architectural League Emerging Voice. She contributed to Nature and Cities, the 2016 Lincoln Land Institute book with her chapter entitled “WPA 2.0: Beauty, Economics, and Politics in the Creation of Public Infrastructure.” Susannah received a BA from Dartmouth College and MArch and MLA degrees from Harvard GSD.
