This session will identify methodologies to reduce impacts on trees scheduled to remain on a project. The session starts with a discussion of organic amendments, followed by a SITES v2 discussion on tree/soils management, and finishing with a presentation on implementing SITES for the first time on a BeltLine park.

Mr. Burke is the Principal LA for Atlanta BeltLine Inc. and has thirty-six years of experience on a myriad institutional, roadway, college and university, residential, and park projects. He oversees day-to-day design and construction efforts for all public open spaces. Recently, he was the CM for the $33 million Westside Trail and assists with the 1.5 mile extension of the Eastside Trail. He was the organizer of ABI’s Organic Land Care Symposium which informed the public about a more sustainable way of maintaining our public spaces. Mr. Burke has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Utah State University.

David Dechant, LEED AP, SITES AP

Mr. Dechant is a LEED and SITES Accredited Professional, an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist (SO-5335BM), an ISA Certified Municipal Specialist and an ISA Certified Tree Risk Assessor. He holds a Bachelors degree in Environmental Soil Science from the University of Georgia. He is currently employed by Arborguard Tree Specialists as a Senior Consulting Construction Arborist. He has spent the past 12 years working exclusively to prescribe natural solutions that protect valuable tree, soil and water resources on construction sites. He presents monthly tree and construction related Lunch & Learn seminars to Landscape Architecture firms throughout the Metro Atlanta area.

Christopher W. Fields-Johnson

Chris graduated Summa Cum Laude in Forest Resource Management from Virginia Tech in 2008 and holds M.Sci. and Ph.D. degrees in Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences from Virginia Tech. He has worked as a Plant Health Care Specialist for Bartlett Tree Experts and now works as a Technical Advisor for the Davey Institute, a Division of the Davey Tree Expert Company. He is originally from Richmond, Virginia and now lives in Scottsville, Virginia with his wife and daughter where they raise sheep. His work is focused on soil management for tree and landscape health, tree preservation and water quality improvement.
