This session will look at many aspects and benefits of lifelong play: emotional, physical, social, and cognitive skills and how designers can elevate the value of play environments in a way that increases health for all—kids, teenagers, adults, elderly—the entire community.

Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect, PC

As President of Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect, PC, an award winning firm focusing on the human experience in the landscape, Joy has shared her experience of empowerment through play from the TEDx stage and recently launched PLAYCE, a community participation methodology rooted in play. She was honored as Distinguished Private Practitioner by NYUASLA Chapter and her firm as a Buffalo Fast Track Company. She is co-founder of Pop Up Park Buffalo and a partner in Enterprise Lumber and Silo, a brownfield redevelopment project. Joy is a graduate of Cornell University and the University at Buffalo’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership program.

Kate Tooke, ASLA

Senior Associate, Landscape Architect
Sasaki

Kate is a licensed landscape architect and senior associate within Sasaki’s urban studio, where she focuses on waterfronts, urban parkland and the intersection between communities and environment. She leads Sasaki’s research initiative on outdoor playscapes, and has been instrumental in the design and evaluation of several custom adventure playscapes. Prior to discovering landscape architecture, Kate taught math and science in the Boston Public School system: her passion for inspiring and empowering urban youth now infuses all aspects of her work as a landscape architect. She holds a Masters in Education in addition to a Masters in Landscape Architecture.

Jennifer L. Nitzky, ASLA

Landscape Architect
ASLA-NY

Jennifer is a Landscape Architect and Certified Arborist with over 20 years of experience in urban planning and design, park and recreational design, playgrounds, and campus design. She is skilled in community-oriented planning and design processes leading workshops, design charrettes and hands-on activities. In partnership with the New York Chapter of ASLA and the Trust for Public Land, she developed The Student Stewardship Program which aims to inspire NYC students to discover landscape architecture through engaging, hands-on projects. She is passionate about expanding awareness of the profession and a strong advocate for landscape and environmental issues through social media outlets.

Michael Suk

Chairman, Musculoskeletal Institute
Geisinger Health System

Dr. Suk is an international leader and expert in orthopaedic surgery and also has training as a health care attorney. He is currently Chairman of the Musculoskeletal Institute for the Geisinger Health System, Danville, PA. In 2003, he was selected as a White House Fellow and during his appointment he organized Get Fit with US and HealthierUS. He co-authored a law review article with then Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton titled "America's Public Lands and Waters: Gateway to Better Health." Dr. Suk championed the idea of providing a “play prescription” not only for kids, but for all ages.
