Trends in sustainable design and resiliency require landscape architects to be versed in ecosystem services and measurable benefits. Green infrastructure provides opportunities for valuing natural and built systems. The expert speakers will provide their insights and case studies for design and maintenance strategies, including the SITES v2 framework.

Lisa’s practice in ecology-based design began in the early 1990’s on over 35 ecological restoration projects and was featured in LAM August, 2015 “Return of the Swamp”. In 2004 Lisa launched Studioverde (Maine, New York, Austin) as a collaborative of landscape architects and resource-based practitioners focused on sustainable design and SITES certification. Lisa has been an active speaker and educator on SITES and participated in the SITES AP program development. Lisa has spoken at ASLA Annual Meetings (1997, 2014, 2015, 2017). She is an officer in ASLA’s Sustainable Design PPN and one of the first SITES APs in the US.

Martha P. Sheils

Director
New England Environmental Finance Center

Martha Sheils is the Director of the New England Environmental Finance Center. Martha manages the development and implementation of program areas, and executes the long term vision of the Center. Martha’s work focuses on training and technical assistance to communities on financing critical environmental programs such as stormwater management. Prior to working at the Environmental Finance Center, she was a Project Manager at the Harvard Institute for International Development at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She holds a BA in Economics from Rutgers University, and a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

Rachel Bouvier

Rachel Bouvier is founder of rbouvier consulting, a woman-owned consulting firm specializing in environmental and natural resource economics, climate change, and community economic development. Rachel earned her PhD in Economics from UMASS-Amherst, where she focused on the relationship between economic development and environmental quality. She also holds a Master’s degree in Resource Economics and Community Development from UNH. Rachel is a skilled teacher, facilitator and public speaker, and earned her Envision Sustainable Professional designation from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. She has spoken about the economics of ecosystem valuation on numerous occasions to landscape architecture and engineering firms upon request.

Marla J. Stelk

Executive Director
Association of State Wetland Managers

Marla J. Stelk is the Executive Director at the Association of State Wetland Managers where she leads the Association's research and educational efforts regarding ecosystem service valuation and wetland restoration. Marla has written many articles, blogs and white papers on the subject, including "Ecosystem Service Valuation for Wetland Restoration: What It Is, How To Do It, and Best Practice Recommendations." Ms. Stelk has presented at numerous professional conferences around the country, including the ASLA 2014 Annual Meeting in Denver where she was a panelist for "Behind the Scenes of Wetland Restoration: Critical Roles for Landscape Architects."
