Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the potential to transform transportation and land use to a level not seen since the mass production of the private automobile. Learn about the latest research on how AVs will change communities and explore how landscape architects can lead in designing for an AV future.

American Planning Association

David Rouse, ASLA is the Managing Director of Research and Advisory Services for the American Planning Association in Washington, DC. In this capacity he leads the Planning Advisory Service, National Centers for Planning (Green Communities, Hazards Planning, and Planning and Community Health), and special initiatives such as Planning for Autonomous Vehicles. Prior to joining APA, David was a principal at WRT in Philadelphia, where he specialized in city, regional, and green infrastructure planning. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a registered landscape architect with over 35 years of experience in community planning and design.

Thomas Fisher, Assoc. AIA

Professor, Director of the Minnesota Design Center
University of Minnesota

Thomas Fisher is Professor, Director of the Minnesota Design Center, and Dayton Hudson Chair in Urban Design at the University of Minnesota. He specializes in design thinking and systems design, including transportation systems and transportation-related land use and zoning. Named a top-25 design educator four times by Design Intelligence, Fisher has lectured at 36 universities and over 150 professional and public meetings. He has written 9 books, over 50 book chapters or introductions, and over 400 articles in professional journals and major publications. His most recent book, Designing our Way to a Better World, was published in 2016.
