Colleges and universities are built to last through the ages. A landscape architect’s time frame for thinking about campus landscapes should be generational rather than short-term. This panel of campus LAs and facilities managers will examine how changing paradigms in landscape maintenance can powerfully influence the design process and outcomes.

Principal
Jonathan Ceci Landscape Architect

Jonathan's practice focuses on the planning and design of gardens, campuses and cities. He is passionate about ecological design and works in diverse habitats, ranging from the estuarial landscapes of South Carolina's Low Country to the high desert of Arizona. He recently lead campus transformation projects at Clemson University and Grinnell College and a large, multidisciplinary consultant team working to transform the National Aquarium’s waterfront campus in Baltimore. After nearly a decade at Ayers Saint Gross (where he served as principal in charge of the firm's landscape architecture team), Jonathan is launching an independent design studio.

David Cutter, ASLA, SITES AP

University Landscape Architect
Cornell University

David is the University Landscape Architect for Cornell University in Ithaca NY. His 11 years of experience at Cornell started with the development of their Comprehensive Master Plan with a significant focus on sustainability and the public realm. His primary duties revolve around campus design and stewardship as a member of the Campus Planning Department. He is a licensed landscape architect in NYS, and SITES AP with 30 years of experience in planning, design and management. He earned his BS in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University, and a MS in Environmental Science from Drexel University.

Sue Wyndham, ASLA

Landscape Planner
University of Delaware

Sue Wyndham, ASLA, holds a masters degree in landscape architecture from the State University of New York, College of Environment Science and Forestry, and has been serving as Landscape Planner at the University of Delaware (UD), Facilities-Ground Services, since 2013. Her background includes over 25-years of experience in horticulture and landscape architecture. At UD, her primary responsibilities include designing and managing campus landscape renovation and improvement projects, providing landscape design review for new construction, and working as a liaison between UD Ground Services, other university departments and outside consultants regarding projects, practices and policies that impact the campus landscape.

Michael F. Loftus, MBA

Director of Landscape and Grounds Management
University of Delaware

Mike directs the Landscape and Grounds Management division of the University of Delaware Facilities Department, where his responsibilities include overseeing landscape architecture and campus planning projects, an internal team of 40 unionized management and professional staff and contracted landscape maintenance services for two campuses totaling 600 acres. Mike has over 40 years of experience in the industry including landscape design-build, commercial landscape maintenance and studio work in landscape architecture. In addition to holding degrees in horticulture and business administration, Mike is a Certified Grounds Manger and serves on the Board of Directors of the Professional Grounds Management Society.

Daniel Schied

Director of Grounds
Cornell University



Dan Schied is the Director of Grounds at Cornell University since 2015. Prior, he was Manager of Horticulture and Grounds at the University of Rochester for 22 years, after 14 years in the private sector as President of Custom Development Associates, Inc., dba Melrose Nursery and Custom Landscape and Design. He is a Lifetime Certified Nursery Landscape Professional and in 2011 became the 132nd individual to complete the PGMS Certified Grounds Manager program.
He is a regular presenter at state, regional and national conferences in the areas of horticulture, sports fields, snow removal, sustainable practices, and operational management.
