Purpose: Prior Authorization Drug Requests (PADRs) are necessary to ensure medications are prescribed in a manner that is both clinically appropriate and cost-effective. Pharmacists are well-equipped to perform these reviews as medication experts. This project was designed to uncover and correct inefficiencies in the three parts of the PADR process including: provider entering the request, formulary manager coordinating the report for the pharmacists, and pharmacist reviewing and completing the consult.
Methods: Process mapping was used to detail each step in the three parts of the PADR process. Opportunities for improvement were noted throughout the process map. Areas of improvement with the most potential impact will be implemented to both PADR request and PADR completion templates to optimize and streamline the review process, and therefore reduce waste and inefficiencies.
Results: We will measure outcomes associated with the multiple steps of the PADR process including: time spent by formulary managers to compile report, time taken to complete the PADR from time entered by provider to time processed by pharmacist, and pharmacist satisfaction with the improved PADR process. Results pending.
Conclusion: Pending
