Purpose: The objective of the study is to assess the prescribing and monitoring practices in patients receiving antidepressants for depressive and anxiety related disorders in primary care and primary care mental health integration clinics (PCMHI) at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System (PVAHCS) as outlined within the Veteran Affairs’ (VA) PCMHI integrated care manual.
Methods: Data for this retrospective chart review will be collected for Veterans who have received an antidepressant in either primary care or PCMHI clinic for the management of depression and/or anxiety related disorders at the PVAHCS from October 1st, 2017 to October 1st, 2018.
The primary objective is to assess the adherence to recommendations provided by the VA’s PCMHI integrated care manual for antidepressant prescribing and monitoring in Veterans treated within primary care and PCMHI clinics. All other indications for antidepressant utilization will be excluded for this review. Primary outcomes for the study will be as follows: antidepressant(s) indication; duration of therapy; adherence; baseline lab monitoring documentation (CHEM-7, vitamin d, liver enzymes, vitals, electrocardiogram, and thyroid function); and reasons for antidepressant discontinuation. In addition – data such as the percentage of Veterans who were enrolled in primary care and PCMHI clinical services, concurrently, will be assessed during the specified time of study.
