Purpose: The Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center implemented new criteria for use for methadone in September 2018. The primary objective of this quality improvement analysis is to compare safety monitoring between pre-implementation and post-implementation of methadone criteria for use. Additionally, an assessment of whether or not other co-morbid psychiatric conditions impact safety of methadone and adherence to follow-up will be conducted as a secondary objective. The goal of this quality improvement analysis is to help determine if the implemented methadone criteria for use is improving safety monitoring of methadone.
Methods: To complete this quality improvement analysis, active methadone prescription data will be pooled for patients in the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center regarding major side effects experienced. Side effects to be assessed include: QT prolongation and torsades de pointes. Additional information that will be collected include: co-morbid psychiatric conditions, lab monitoring, EKG monitoring, and urine drug screen monitoring. The data will be collected 12 months pre and 3 months post methadone criteria for use implementation.
