Purpose: The purpose of this study is to retrospectively compare mortality rates and heart failure related hospitalizations with the use of sacubitril/valsartan and standard therapy in veterans diagnosed with heart failure.
Methods: Patients meeting inclusion criteria will be indexed into the study at the initiation of sacubitril/valsartan and will be matched to a control population based on several clinical factors to include sex; age; race; Charlson comorbidity index; New York Heart Association class; left ventricular ejection fraction; concurrent medications for treatment of heart failure; comorbid diagnoses such as hypertension, atrial fibrillation, history of myocardial infarction, and renal failure; and the number of heart failure related hospitalizations in the 12 months preceding index date. Control group patients will be indexed at the time of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) lab draw where the result is >100 pg/mL if they had a heart failure related hospitalization in the prior year or >150 pg/mL if they had not. Patients will be followed for 1 year from the index date.
