The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has built a multitude of projects with various authorized purposes ranging from dams and levees to surge barriers and constructed wetlands. In order to design and optimize new projects as well as operate and maintain existing projects, it is imperative to understand the pertinent hydrologic hazards when making risk informed decisions. A cornerstone of any hydrologic hazard assessment is a frequency analysis of the systems’ pertinent variables such as flow, stage, and/or precipitation.

The Hydrologic Engineering Center’s (HEC) Statistical Software Package (HEC-SSP) contains an array of computational abilities that aid users when performing hydrologic frequency analyses. Existing features range from computing flow-frequency using annual maximum flows using Bulletin 17C procedures to quickly developing balanced hydrographs from multiple observed shapes using input flow- and volume-frequency relationships. Version 2.2 of HEC-SSP contains novel features, such as the Distribution Fitting analysis, that can help a user analyze flow, stage, precipitation, and wind speed (amongst others) and fit multiple probability distributions and visualize their associated uncertainties. In this way, more informative hydrologic hazard assessments can be rapidly developed.
