802 - Solving Water Treatment Problems with Computational Fluid Dynamics - Xiaofeng Liu & Jie Zhang

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been successful in understanding and solving engineering problems in water treatment (includes drinking water, wastewater and stormwater treatment). To arm more environmental engineers with this powerful tool, the EWRI CFD task committee developed a primer aiming to show the engineers where to use CFD and how to use it. In this workshop, the EWRI CFD task committee will present this primer and collect feedback from participants through discussion. Guest speakers from universities, water utilities, and consulting companies will be invited to talk about the challenges and perspective of CFD applications in water industry. Through the workshop, participants should be able to learn the progress of CFD technologies in water treatment industry and emerging CFD applications in this area.

Xiaofeng Liu got his bachelor's degree in Hydraulic Engineering from Tsinghua University, China and master's degree in Environmental Science from Peking University, China. He then got his PhD at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).He is now an assistant professor at Penn State University. His research area includes computational hydraulics, sediment transport, and erosion.

Jie Zhang, PhD

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Specialist
Carollo Engineers, Inc.

Jie (Jay) Zhang is a computational scientist with expertise in modeling environmental flows in engineered and natural systems. He earned PhD degree in Civil Engineering (interdisciplinary concentration) at the University of South Florida, Tampa. Florida, in 2014. He is a pioneer in investigating water and wastewater treatment problems from the perspective of fluid mechanics; He created a framework by integrating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and chemical reaction kinetics models and successfully applied it to water treatment industries (Evaluating technical performance and economic/environmental sustainability of water treatment facilities). He is also a leader in promoting CFD in the community of civil and environmental engineers; He established an ASCE EWRI task committee on computational fluid dynamics. He proposed and moderated technical sessions on CFD applications in water, wastewater and stormwater engineering at international conferences.
