The Water Treatment, Agricultural-logistics, and Renewable Energy (WeARE) systems project at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture between 2014 and 2016 . The WeARE project goals were to (1) design, develop and implement a comprehensive STEM reform model founded on an innovative framework through educational, research, outreach and partnership initiatives built on a fellowship program, research experience, interdisciplinary courses and a pathway academy in WeARE fields; and (2) investigate its impact on pedagogical approaches and student outcomes. Among many activities, the following was accomplished: curriculum improvement, by generating new cross-listed courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; collaborative and interdisciplinary research infrastructure in WeARE systems; workshops and seminars using innovative approaches to convey knowledge and explain the science behind the management, optimization and conservation of WeARE Systems; and experiential learning and first-hand research experiences for students with an emphasis on under-represented minority populations in the STEM field. The project created a fellowship program for undergraduate and graduate students. The program also funded paid summer internships at the USDA Agriculture Research Service laboratories. In total, the WeARE program benefited four graduate students, eleven undergraduate from the College of Engineering of the UTSA, fifteen community college students, and over one hundred K-12 students from San Antonio.
