This presentation will discuss the role that "Sin el agua no hay vida," an interdisciplinary, international collaborative student senior design project started at Stevens Institute of Technology in 2011 has played in engaging undergraduate students to think globally and recognize that STEM is better with STEAM. Using three seasons of work in Latin America, we will describe the motivation for our integration of history, social science, and art and technology into STEM projects, as well as the development of collaborative networks that engaged underrepresented students, through hands-on, community based projects focused on water distribution. Drawing from data collected over four seasons, as well as interviews with participants, we hope to provide evidence for project based learning with STEAM, like "Sin el agua no hay vida," to be modified to fit any educational setting.

Leslie Brunell is currently a Teaching Professor in the department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering. She coordinates both Civil Engineering and Multidiscipline Engineering senior design projects. These projects are the culmination of the undergraduate engineering experience where students use the knowledge they have gained during their undergraduate studies to design an innovative solution to a complex problem.

Prof. Brunell is also the director of the Water Resources graduate program. In addition to Senior Design, she teaches Surveying, Fluid Mechanics and co-teaches Water Resources. Leslie was an advisor to the 2015 Stevens Solar Decathlon house.

Leslie is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of NJ, the faculty advisor for the Stevens chapter of Society of Women Engineers, faculty mentor for the Stevens Field Hockey team and a member of ASCE, AWWA and ASEE.
