398016 - Considerations for Designing Resilient Stormwater Drainage Infrastructure

The optimal design of sewer systems in the context of resiliency will investigate sewer design considerations for which pre-disaster resiliency factors – redundancy and robustness - are included in the mathematical modeling framework. Considerations for post-disaster resiliency factors – rapidity and resourcefulness – are discussed. The primary objective is the optimal design of resilient storm sewer systems. This study will provide a review of pertinent literature and provide a framework for the design of sewer systems in this context. Climate variation considerations and the examination of recent extreme events impacting stormwater infrastructure provide a good backdrop for this study.

Emmanuel U. Nzewi, Professor and Department Head in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, TX. He assumed his current position in August 2013. Dr. Nzewi earned his Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering, focusing in Water Resources Engineering (operations management), from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree (with High Honors) in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI. Dr. Nzewi has worked, primarily in academia in the water resources field, for over 30 years. His research and professional interests include: multi-purpose reservoir operations, development of water supply alternatives in developing regions, development of digital elevation models for watershed characterization, and the development of algorithms for sewer design.
