397981 - Self-Sufficient Disaster Relief Water Filtration System

Natural disasters can have dire effects on the availability of clean water. Power outages and damage to water treatment and distribution systems can leave people without access to water for days, if not weeks. As the intensity and frequency of these disasters continue to increase, improved planning and preparation is essential. A self-sufficient water filtration system can lessen the harsh aftermath of disasters by providing a permanent system that allows people to prepare ahead of time for the need of water and to do so in an environmentally friendly way. The multifunctional structure cleans rainwater as it passes through the layers of the raised bed. From there the filtered water can be stored in the base of the structure and utilized as drinking water during times of need or it can be discharged to avoid stagnation. Different filter media and run times are analyzed, along with the structural stability to provide a durable system that can withstand the extreme conditions of natural disasters, including flooded terrains, contaminated water sources, unavailability of electrical power, damaged road accesses, and disrupted material supply chains. A prototype of the system is tested for key performance parameters. The engineering provisions and economic considerations regarding a typical site installation are also being assessed given the special extreme conditions to be encountered.

DR. Yeo Howe Lim is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at University of North Dakota. He teaches fluid mechanics and courses in water resources engineeirng. He is currently conducting research in areas of open channel flows, water quality of storm runoffs, and impacts of climate change on water infrastructures.
