It has been difficult for planners and engineers to predict the site-specific effects of rain gardens, such as reducing peak flow and total volume of runoff. Several rain gardens were constructed at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ to evaluate the impact of rain gardens and to generate data that could be used to calibrate hydrologic models, specifically, the US EPA’s Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). SWMM is the only known hydrologic model to explicitly incorporate LID/GI controls, but its accuracy has yet to be thoroughly tested.

The inflow and outflow of the rain gardens were instrumented to measure field performance over several months. Different configurations and media were used to evaluate the effectiveness across various types of rain gardens. In one configuration, a conventional “in-ground” rain garden with shallow media depth and underdrains manages roof runoff. Elsewhere, above-ground concrete planter boxes were built with two types of engineered media.

The measured data was used to calibrate SWMM using Low Impact Development controls to evaluate how well the model’s predicted values match the real-world measurements. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted to test how parameterization of model inputs impact the accuracy of the results.
