397809 - 2D Hydraulic Modeling Presentation for Panel Discussion on Task Committee for “Calibration/Validation of Free-Surface Hydraulic Models”

The proposed task committee has drafted different various portions of the Calibration/Validation of Free-Surface Hydraulic Models document. This task committee has a draft document with various components that cover the calibration and validation of free surface hydraulic models that represent the physical componets of the systems in one, two or three dimensions (i.e. 1D, 2D, 3D). This paper will of will provide some of the components of the 2D hydraulic model and demonstrate the different types of models scenarios and real world physical problems that require practical solutions. Different hydraulic problems will be presented along with how the key physical components of the system will be identified along with the analytical numerical solutions to those problems will be described and presented.
The presentation will show key parameters, such as water surface (i.e. water stage), velocities, hydrodynamics, sedimentation, etc. will be identified for solving with a model. Additionally, there should be an understanding what physical processes are occurring and if there is a need to resolve them in one, two or three dimensions (i.e. 1D, 2D, 3D). Details for the discussion will be determining if the modeler wishes to solve for water stages then the modeler may be able to use a model that has 1D and 2D capability, however, if the modeler would like a model to solve for velocities that may be different along the channel bottom and sides then modeler would have to use a model that has 2D and/or 3D capability.
