EPANET is a widely used desktop software application for simulating the hydraulic and water quality behavior of drinking water distribution systems. EPA first released EPANET version 1.1, which included an easy to use user interface, in 1994. EPANET 2.0 was released in 2000 with a toolkit application programmer’s interface (API) that allowed expanded capabilities for advanced applications. Due to its capabilities and ease of use, EPANET has been used and continues to be used by multitudes of utility engineers, consultants, academics, researchers, and students to design and evaluate water distribution networks. EPA’s last release of EPANET was 2.00.12 in 2008. To better support EPANET stakeholders and the needs of the water community, EPA has initiated an open source software (OSS) project to advance and maintain EPANET. As part of this effort, EPA has established an Enterprise GitHub account to develop software in an open and collaborative manner. EPANET source code is now available on this site, including a new OSS project to reengineer the EPANET user interface (UI) application. EPA is reaching out to all stakeholders and requesting input on ways the community can participate in the future development of the EPANET software. This presentation will present EPA’s plans for the EPANET OSS project, including a release schedule, code documentation, quality control and assurance plans, bug and feature request tracking, user manual, and example case studies.
