397372 - Multi-purpose Experiment with Localized Vegetation Patches in a Large-scale Outdoor Flume

Stream-scale experiments were performed to analyze vegetated flow, bed load transport, and morphological changes with localized vegetation patches of rooted willows. A large-scale outdoor flume in the KICT-REC (Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology – River Experiment Center) was used for the multi-purpose experiment with different hydraulic conditions. Two different hydrographs for incoming discharge over 40 hrs with same bed load capacity were generated with large capacity pumps. The channel section used for this study is a 60 m long stretch with a trapezoidal cross-section of 3 m bottom width and 11 m top width. The localized vegetation patch was about 4 m long and 1.5 m wide and vegetation properties such as the number of stems, branches, and leafs and the height were investigated before and after the experiment. During the large-scale experiment, flow velocity was measured by ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) and bed changes before and after water flows were observed by 3D scanning and manual surveying. A mini Helley-Smith sampler was used to collect the bed load samples for each time steps and ultrasonic meters and side looking Doppler current meter were applied to observe and record water level changes by time in the different points. Velocity distributions, bed load transport, and bed changes in the vegetation patch and in the main channel of non-vegetation were compared for different hydraulic conditions.
