Outstanding Florida Waters are rivers, lakes and other water features designated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) as “worthy of special protection because of their natural attributes.” The Econlockhatchee River System (Big Econ River) is located within Central Florida and is designated by FDEP as an Outstanding Florida Water. The Econlockhatchee River System ultimately discharges to the St. Johns River.

During a 2-year period, monthly water quality and discharge monitoring was performed on a 3-mile stretch of the Big Econ River, and included two tributaries that discharge to the river within the study area. Six separate monitoring sites were established at the upstream/downstream locations of the river study area and the upstream/downstream locations of the two tributaries. Monthly field parameters were collected including pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen. Water quality samples were collected and analyzed for total nitrogen and total phosphorus. Discharge measurements within the river and the tributaries at each of the six monitoring sites were collected.

During the 2-year study period, Central Florida experienced two hurricanes and a 5-month drought, resulting in one of the highest and lowest elevations recorded in the 3-mile river study area. The 2-year dataset of field parameters, water quality monitoring and discharge measurement were analyzed to evaluate the influences that weather and watershed runoff have on the section of river.
