397265 - Low-cost Multi-Channel Pressure Measurement Solution with Computer Vision Technology

Pressure tube is an old but still popular device to measure pressure in open-channels and pipes. The device is fairly cheap besides the labor cost of reading the liquid level in it. In order to reduce the labor cost, a new solution with computer vision technology is put forward. In our experiment, a camera is used to monitor several tubes at the same time and the liquid levels are read by an image processing algorithm in real time. The image processing algorithm is based on pattern recognition. It is robust that no special lighting system is needed. Also, its calculating cost is low enough to run on a laptop and it can be ported to the mobile platforms (e.g. iOS and android). The errors of the water levels are corrected with the relative locations of the pressure tubes and the camera. The whole system is tested on a water tank with free surface and a water pipe with a pump respectively. The results show that the liquid levels read by the camera are as accurate as those read by naked eyes. Moreover, the performances of the system in weak light and other illumination environments are tested and discussed. At last, the accuracy and robustness of the system are discussed in detail. As a result, the pressure measurement solution is low-cost, portable, accurate and easy to expend.
