Shortage of electric energy is one of the major problems in developing countries, especially in South-east Asia. The energy producing companies are facing a challenge of meeting increasing demand with significant peak and base load differences with hydro-electric projects. The variability in energy demand (hourly, seasonal, and yearly) and temporal changes in streamflow availability (seasonal and annual) to harness energy complicate the design and regulation of a hydro-electric project. This study explored the options for installed capacity and intake regulations, and compared the productivity of the plant with respect to the changing demand. A system dynamics model was developed for a hydro-electric project in Nepal with the variable energy demand and the availability of streamflow as the primary control parameters. Improved energy production during low flow and high demand and reduced surplus during high flow and low demand were achieved with the regulation of intake that required increased storage capacity. Comparative analyses were conducted to determine the best alternative among the various scenarios. Such models for hydro-electric plants may be helpful in selecting the appropriate installed capacity and inflow regulations under variable demand and supply conditions.
