The application of optimization techniques, such as metaheuristics, in the solution of problems related with the design and management of Water Distribution Systems – WDS has become a common practice nowadays, in order to minimize both constructive and operational costs, and also to improve the performance of the networks. However, as a result of the impact that these decisions can have over the system, the used methodologies must be efficient in terms of the quality of the given solution, and also the computational times it takes to produce it.

To solve the operational problem that consists in valve-setting in a WDS, every pipe in the network represents a potential location for a valve; although based upon on the hydraulic behavior of the system, the pipes can be classified according different criteria, leading to the selection of a set of pipes that are more critical than others, becoming into better candidates for the location of valves; in this way, the solution space is reduced.

This papers attempts to demonstrate the advantages of reducing the solution space as a preliminary step in the application of optimization methods, seeking to achieve an optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time. To accomplish this, three hydraulic criteria were tested in some WDS in order to obtain a set of potential valve locations, whose performance was measured through the quality of the optimal solution reached by the implementation of a multi-objective methodology used to determine the location and settings of Pressure-Reducing Valves in order to reduce leakages within a WDS, and also the time it took to reach it.
