Drainage water recycling, the practice of capturing and storing excess water drained from fields and using the stored water to irrigate crops, has the potential to reduce nutrient losses from drained fields in the Midwest and reduce eutrophication in downstream water bodies. However the quantity of drain flow and nutrient reduction varies for different sizes of water storage reservoir, as well as location and field characteristics, making it difficult to determine the reduction expected and appropriate policies to support this practice as a nutrient reduction practice. This presentation will discuss the new Drainage Water Recycling Evaluation Tool that uses climate, drain flow, and site information to assess the drain flow and nutrient reductions for various sizes of water storage reservoirs. Application to sites in Indiana and Iowa using measured data will be used to demonstrate the long-term distribution of potential reductions at those sites. Simulated drain flow and measured climate data for the entire Midwest are available in the tool, and can be used to determine potential reductions at any location in the region. This information will be useful for conservation decision-makers comparing the effectiveness of various nutrient reduction practices, and for considering incentives to increase adoption of this practice.
