Approaching the natural hydrology (NH) condition of a watershed could help mitigate the negative urbanization impacts on water budget components in an urban catchment to a sustainable level. To assess closeness to NH, the concept of Water-Budget-Restoration-Coefficient (WBRC) has been recently introduced. Recent studies have shown Green-infrastructure (GI) techniques can significantly contribute to improve WBRC. Moreover, GIs are able to provide significant Ecosystem Services (ES). Thus, the goal of this study was set to compare the runoff minimization as a decision making objective to WBRC, in terms of ES and costs, by a systematic multi-objective optimization framework which is developed using Non-Dominated-Sorting-Genetic-Algorithm (NSGA-II). Specifically, two optimization scenarios are considered: (i) considering the Implementation Cost (IC) and the quantity of runoff (QOR) as objectives, and (ii) considering IC and the WBRC. Then the optimum plans for the two scenario will be compared in terms of ES provision. This provides a platform to answer the question of which of the either runoff minimization or nearness to natural hydrology, should be used as a stormwater management goal. Also, with a limited monetary budget, what configuration of GIs would be more efficient with respect to the desired goal. Bioretention cells were chosen for the GI plans, and the plans are analyzed under precipitation of three whole water years of wet, average and dry. A 0.11 km2 urban subcatchment in stormwater drainage network of Salt Lake City, is the focus of this study, and stormwater characteristics and GI performance are modeled using EPA SWMM5

Hessam (Ed) Tavakol-Davani is a Master of Science student in Civil Engineering with a focus on Water Resources Management studies at the university of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. He got graduated from Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), Tehran, Iran, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil engineering in August 2015. He has been serving as an RA and a TA simultaneously since his first semester. His research focuses on analyzing different Low-Impact Development techniques (LIDs) to manage stormwater in urban areas. Recently, he has published a technical paper on evaluating rainwater harvesting systems performance in mitigating climate change impacts on combined sewer overflows (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2210670716301494) .
