395285 - Predictive Maintenance of Stormwater Infrastructure through Real-Time Monitoring

Properly operating and maintaining stormwater management practices (SMPs) is critical to ensuring their functionality and longevity. State stormwater maintenance guidelines have indicated that the cost of annual maintenance SMPs can range between 4% - 9% of construction costs with each routine site inspection costing upwards of $800. The suggested frequency of routine maintenance varies from biweekly (e.g. vegetation management, mechanical maintenance, sediment/pollutant control) to biannual (e.g. erosion repair, embankment stabilization, or sediment removal). Limited funding and resources can lead to unintentional neglect of SMPs, often times triggering more costly rehabilitation efforts.

Advancements in the fields of remote sensing, big data analytics, cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity are enabling predictive maintenance of stormwater facilities through continuous, real-time monitoring (via data alerts and data analytics through online dashboards). Facility owners are alerted to a problem developing in their infrastructure or hardware instead of having to identify issues visually during routine inspections. For example, real-time alerts for unexpected changes in water levels; abnormal drawdown times; or inconsistent sensor readings may indicate an immediate maintenance concern such as a clogged orifice, damaged pipe or outlet structures, or a faulty sensor that needs to be cleaned or replaced. Real-time monitoring of site parameters provides operations and maintenance cost and labor benefits to the facility owner.

This presentation discusses example use cases and the value added through cost reductions, improved labor management, and reduction of asset down times when remote access to continuous real-time site data is made available to site operations and maintenance teams.
